Coronavirus Crisis – Relief activities

While we are trying to reach more and more suicide farmer families and rural area govt schools, the current corona-virus pandemic has put all of us into greater trouble. While most of us are privileged that we can afford to make our ends meet, there are daily laborers and other classes of people who have been struggling to get food safety. Team Manabhumi received requests from other NGOs to support those families that are in dire need due to lock-down.

These are the different activities going on right now under lock-down conditions.

Current need: As of now, we are planning to support for suicide farmers families from these places.

Dearth of Agriculture is Famine

In the last 20 years, nearly 300,000 farmers have ended their lives by ingesting pesticides or by hanging themselves. Heartbreaking fact is even the pesticide the farmer bought to end his life is also from debt. If one wants to blame on long droughts, crushing debts, cursing climate, flawed govt schemes... and the list goes on and on. Or, if one wants to come forward and support there are more than hundred thousand families surviving in deep distress looking for relief. It's being long said that "Farmer is backbone of the nation", "Cultivation is the perfection of human beings" however today the reality is quite different in India, here the farmer is the one who sow the seed and gamble his survival with it.

How we do it?

Manabhumi organizers will directly work with local non-profit groups in the villages, surveying and assessing the victims who have not received minimum support from the government.Below is our four fold approach followed in Ananthapur, Mahabubnagar and Nalgonda districts to achieve the best results.

  • We request a reliable local farmer group (NGO that is already assisting victim families with paperwork to receive exgratia from govt) to provide the information of farmers who committed suicide in their area.
  • Initial assessment and verification with the beneficiary will be done over the phone, and later our volunteers visit the village/mandal to verify and further assess the situation of the beneficiary families.
  • After that, beneficiary families are prioritized by considering local NGO suggestions + call verification + our volunteers feedback & assessment.
  • Finally, we convene families at one place in the nearby mandal/village to provide financial support directly to the family.
  • Manabhumi foundation organised an awareness stall at Neknampur lake (Manikonda) on environmental friendly and natural farming products in conjunction with lightning festival which is organised by local groups. The lake is being protected with plants and from a strong fence.Neknampur Lake stall Photos

Our Aim is to train students in those schools to participate & win awards in mandal, district, state & national levels so that their physical & mental skills will be developed along with prospects of securing sports benefits from govt in form of sports quota in their future education.

Every day students of all these schools undergo 1 hour of games period and many students participate in local competitions. Manabhumi has started conducting sports competitions every 2 months and awarding students with prizes and rewards.

In January 2017, KHEL BHARAT project is launched to promote sports in rural areas especially in govt school students to enhance their spirit of learning and leadership. The first phase of Khel Bharat project is providing the required sports kits sufficient for three years to the school students of ZPHS Kistareddipet. Also an able sports guide Mr Mahesh is appointed in one of the school for an initial period of three months which will be extended to years based on future support for this project.

Our heartfelt thanks and appreciation to InstaSmart Software Solutions who came forward to completely sponsor the first phase of KHEL BHARAT project in ZPHS Kistareddypet Govt School - an initiative driven and supported by Manabhumi Foundation from more than two years.

Teach India

Teach India project is launched to provide assistance to students from rural areas especially in govt school students to enhance their spirit of learning and leadership. As part of this initiative, we have been conducting notebook distribution drives at various (Starting with three in 2015, Nine as of 2017) government schools (ZPHS,UPS, PS) from both the Telugu states. This helps to reduce the burden on the benefiting students' parents who work on daily wages for their livelihood. We believe that this motivates for better attendance of students and helps in reducing the school drop-outs. Along with Notebooks distribution we also provide financial awards to talented students in these govt schools.
